Aquitaine - Capital of the Commonwealth

Part 1 (Part 2).

Aquitaine

Aquitaine: A887977-C N

Aquitaine was settled, along with the rest of the cluster, in the early days of the Rule of Man. The original colony program was mounted by the European Union, under the auspices of the Terran Confederation (later Rule of Man) Resettlement Agency. Almost all of the original colonists were of western and north-western European heritage, and the world has retained many traits of these original settlers, including language and culture.

Almost all of Aquitaine's 2.7 billion inhabitants speak Anglic (as the former 'official' language of the Imperium and Solomani Confederation), in most parts of the world this is spoken as a second language. About 52% of the population are French speakers (although the language has evolved substantially over 3700 years), 26% speak German and 11% are Polish-speakers, with the remainder divided up amongst a variety of languages (including Anglic, Greek and Afrikaans -
a legacy of subsequent colonisation programs).

Government:

Aquitaine's old government (a charismatic dictatorship under 'Admiral' Julius Getier) died with the onset of Virus. Aquitaine is now a balkanised world, consisting of 24 seperate nation-states. A very weak central authority, the Estates d'Aquitaine handles disputes between nations, and serves mainly to develop a policy front to the rest of the Commonwealth. The Estates d' Aquitaine is dominated by a handful of states: Provence, the Huguenot Republique,
the Medoc Commonwealth and the Essenbruken Republik.
